I'm Jake Wood, and I wasn't always in great shape.

I found training as a teen, learning everything I could from the big guys in the gym and putting on some muscle for the first time ever - yet I knew nothing about caring for my body and trained recklessly and ignorantly.

When I headed to university, I met my match with the countless nights out, laziness, and alcohol and junk food binges of a carefree student. I piled on pounds emotionally eating and partying. I was working out but felt dissatisfied with the path I found myself on. So I quit.

Over the next ten years, I moved to London, Amsterdam, Spain, The Canaries, Morocco, and back to London with only a backpack and an open mind. Along the way, I discovered yoga and callisthenics, which completely changed my perspective on what movement and exercise could be. This moment marked the beginning of a lifelong relationship with bodyweight movement.

Yet it came with its challenges. The most accomplished people around me were either short, slim or both. I dropped over 13kg in an attempt to become proficient at advanced yoga poses or gymnastic feats of strength, spending hours a day in the gym, park and yoga studio. Whilst I made decent progress, at 6'2" and with a naturally wide frame, the weight I wanted to maintain wasn't serving me. I had to face the fact that the body type I desired was genetically out of reach. I was undernourished, inflamed and overtrained - plus, I was about to become a dad.

It turns out that putting out more and more energy whilst putting in less and less isn't sustainable and won't make you feel good.

I knew I had to find a method of training that allowed me to improve my performance, feel and look at my best, train free from specific locations and equipment, and embrace the body I had without having to commit hours to a day to training.

Over the decade of researching nutrition, physiology and my own real-world exercise experience, like 99.9% of people, I'd ignorantly accepted the dogma that bodyweight training was only for gymnastics, advanced strength skills, commercial gym classes or the military.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have the right equipment?

You can follow the Bodyweight Muscle-Building Blueprint with no equipment, using household items and nature, what’s available at an outdoor gym or playpark, or something as inexpensive as a doorway pull-up bar. However, we recommend a few pieces of equipment to improve your results. To create the ultimate lifelong setup, you would only need to invest less than £150 in a pull-up bar, dip bars and parallettes. The program includes an equipment guide and recommendations.

I can only train 'x' days per week

The program contains flexible training plans to suit almost every schedule, from 2-5 sessions per week. We recommend a minimum of 3 training sessions per week and four training sessions per week to optimise your results. However, it's possible to make progress with less.

I can only train for 'x' time per session

The training sessions in the program last between 45-60 minutes depending on your exercises, sets and reps, including the warmup. However, for those that don’t have that time available, options are provided to reduce session length whilst still producing excellent results.

Can I mix The Bodyweight Muscle-Building Blueprint with other types of training?

The Bodyweight Muscle-Building Blueprint is a complete training program for muscle building that would be complemented by extra mobility work, light activity such as walking or yoga, or casual sport. When you mix in other intense training, it may detract from your results or defeat the program's purpose. However, many participants do different activities and sports alongside the Bodyweight Muscle-Building Blueprint.

What if I'm injured?

If you have past nagging injuries but are cleared to train, the Bodyweight Muscle-Building Blueprint gets your joints, tendons, and muscles stable and robust by moving with quality and control. There are ways to work around an injury in most circumstances by modifying the exercise choices. You can also message me in the private BWM community group if you have concerns about changing a workout.

Is there any coaching?

The Bodyweight Muscle-Building Blueprint is an online DIY program, so I can offer that separately if you are looking for individual coaching. But if you are comfortable reading, learning and asking questions when you need to, you’ll have everything you need. You can ask me and the community questions in the private BWM community group - I will typically answer within 24-48 hours. You can also upload a video if you need a form check on a specific movement.

Will this challenge me enough?

The principles of the Bodyweight Muscle-Building Blueprint can be utilised by any level of athlete - from novice to advanced. You’ll be choosing loads, exercises and volumes appropriate for your level. Included is a comprehensive library of progressive exercises for every movement pattern, so they’ll always be an exercise that challenges you.

Will it be too hard?

The Bodyweight Muscle-Building Blueprint emphasises movement quality and control - so you won’t be pushed into messy reps before developing the required strength. I include regressive versions of all movement patterns so that you can choose exercises and volumes appropriate for your level. I’m just one message away on the BMBB community group if you need help.

How is it different from bodybuilding?

In many ways, the Bodyweight Muscle-Building Blueprint is bodybuilding, just without the weights. But repetitive bodybuilding routines can feel boring - you wouldn’t be here if bicep curls floated your boat. By using functional, compound bodyweight exercises, you not only hit the aesthetic sweet spot but also build strength and ability that carries over into other sports and daily life.

How is it different from bodyweight circuits?

Although circuit training uses bodyweight exercises, it's better considered a cardiovascular workout than a strength or muscle-building practice. There is no focus on load, tempo (unless you mean fast!), range of motion and quality of movement. This, along with the short rest periods, means you are unlikely to build any muscle or strength. The Bodyweight Muscle-Building Blueprint focuses on slow, controlled, quality repetitions of challenging exercises with adequate recovery between sets.

How is it different from street calListhenics?

Street callisthenics is usually focused on working up to advanced strength skills such as planche and front lever, and dynamic skills on the bar such as 360 spins and flips. Achieving the skills requires an entirely different training approach. Whilst you will gain great strength and skill using Bodyweight Muscle-Building Blueprint, our focus is to use the principles of hypertrophy to build a muscular physique that has been overlooked in bodyweight training. 

IS THIS PROGRAM FOR WOMEN?

If your goal is to build muscle and strength and take control of your body, then the Bodyweight Muscle-Building Blueprint is for you. Gender is irrelevant. Despite conventional wisdom, there is no male and female way of training. Women are no longer condemned to be 'skinny' - you can be muscular, fit, strong, and feel great in your body. If you're here, you likely already know that.

Do I have to take a protein supplement for this to work?

Absolutely not. In the Bodyweight Muscle-Building Blueprint, I recommend you get all your nutrition from whole foods first. I personally do not take a protein supplement. If you cannot get enough protein from your diet due to your lifestyle, schedule or preferences, you can supplement with protein.

I follow a specific diet (vegan, vegetarian etc.), will this work for me?

It was important to me to make the Bodyweight Muscle-Building Blueprint inclusive. For that reason, rather than impose a rigid diet, I offer universal nutritional principles that can be applied to any dietary preference, lifestyle, value or belief. There is a list of vegan protein sources included in the shopping list.

Having spent my twenties practising yoga, surfing and callisthenics around the world, my expertise is far removed from the conventional gym-orientated coach. Rather than following the typical path of a coach or trainer, for most of my life, movement, nutrition, mindfulness, and other well-being practices have been a fervent passion but never a career.
